Why study an aged care course?

Australia is facing an unprecedented workforce shortage in aged care. The Australian Productivity Commission report, Caring for older Australians (2011), stated that by 2050 the projected workforce deficit in aged care supply would reach almost 280,000.

The Health Care and Social Assistance industry is now Australia’s biggest employer with a workforce of 1.3 million, or 11.4 percent of the total number of people employed. To put that in perspective, the retail trade employs 10.9 percent, construction 9.1 percent and manufacturing 8.6 percent. It is also the fastest-growing industry, particularly in the area of aged care.

“At the moment there are 350,000 people in the aged care system,” says Trish Noakes, CEO and founder of Just Better Care. “In the coming decade we’re going to have 3.6 million, of whom one million will have dementia.” An ageing workforce has led to a critical shortage of workers, with recruitment and retention proving major concerns. The overwhelming demand for aged care services is shaping up as the biggest challenge facing the health sector in a generation. Now is the best time to study an aged care course in Melbourne, see if you qualify for government funding now.
