Program details
This program is designed to equip you for paid or volunteer employment in ‘English as a Second Language’ (ESL) teaching positions. It will provide you with a range of knowledge and skills to plan and deliver English lessons, as well as further develop specific competencies in an elective area. With a high focus on practical demonstration of skills, you will be ‘employment ready’ upon your graduation.

With an Australian Bachelor’s degree in any field, Certificate IV TESOL graduates could gain employment at the following institutions:
- TAFE
- private English language colleges
- community and migrant centres
- universities that offer ELICOS programs
Students who hold this qualification only, could have employment opportunities…
- in private tutoring, or
- paid work overseas
MCIE advises students to contact individual institutions for information regarding the qualification requirements for their TESOL teachers.

- Earnings: Full-time workers on an adult wage earn around $1,402 per week (similar to the average of $1,460). Earnings tend to be lower when starting out and higher as experience grows.
- Full-time: Less than half work full-time (37%, less than the average of 66%), showing there are many opportunities to work part-time.

Entry requirements
Achieved a pass level or higher at the completion of Australian senior secondary school (Year 12).
Evidence of having this level of English ability may include:
- Secondary School transcripts showing the required results in English
- Completion of a Certificate III or higher level course in the Australian Qualification
Framework
- A pass mark achieved in an English language proficiency test – either a standardized test, or a test
- Produced specially for this purpose (see English proficiency tests below*)
- Teachers, trainers, lecturers or other supervisors of education programs confirming English language

All candidates require a Unique Student Identification (USI) number. If you do not have a USI number you can apply for one online at https://www.usi.gov.au/students, or you can give MCIE administration staff permission to apply on your behalf.
Prior experience
Digital technology
Students must have access to a computer or laptop and have sufficient digital literacy skills to access online content, enter answers to written questions, attach and upload documents, communicate with trainers via email, the student portal and the learning management system.
Work placement
Students must complete 12 mandatory placement hours made up practicums and observations for the work-based training component of this program. Students are required to find placement in an MCIE approved English School. MCIE can organise your work placement for a $300 fee if required.
