Course details

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to infants and children in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.

Workers including early childhood workers and educators who work with school age children in outside school hours care and vacation programs are required to respond to first aid emergencies, including asthma and anaphylactic emergencies and need to undertake this course.

This unit of competency may contribute towards approved first aid, asthma and anaphylaxis training under the Education and Care Services National Law, and the Education and Care Services National Regulations (2011).

  • How to properly assess an emergency
  • Basic anatomy and physiology related to children and infants when assessing cardiovascular conditions
  • CPR Techniques on children and infants
  • A range of first aid procedures
  • Asthma and Anaphylaxis in a workplace environment
  • How to manage a medical emergency for bites, respiratory distress, stroke and unconsciousness

Statement of Attainment

On completion students will receive a Statement of Attainment for the unit of competency HLTAID012 – Provide First Aid in an education and care setting, this certificate will also state that it is issued in partial completion of CHC30121 – Certificate III Early Childhood Education and Care into which program they are enrolled.

Program delivery

This program is delivered combining both self-paced online learning and assessment, approximately 4.5 hours and on MCIE campus mandatory in-person attendance, with 5 hours practical assessment using hardcopy assessments and resources.

Delivery and assessment

Online assessment multiple choice questions. Practical roleplays, CPR demonstration requires working on the ground with first aid manequins and completing an incident report.

Pre-requisites

There are no pre-requisites for the course however, entry requirements require all participants to have completed their online theory and have 100% competency in all three online assessments prior to attending the practical assessment.

Failing to do so will result in participants being refused entry by the trainer on the day of your practical class.

Once you have enrolled into your course you will receive a link from MCIE to our LMS which will give you access to your online theory lessons and assessment tasks. You will be given full instructions once you have successfully enrolled in your course.

A USI (unique student identifier) number is a mandatory requirement for any student wishing to undertake vocational training. A USI number is unique to you and provided by the government to keep a secure online record of your VET certifications. After successfully completing your training with Melbourne City Institute of Education (MCIE) you will receive a Statement of Attainment for your first aid course. (increase this font).

Digital technology

Students are required to have sufficient digital literacy skills to access online content, enter answers to written questions and communicate with trainers via email, the student portal and the learning management system.
