Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment process that assesses the competency/s of an individual that may have been acquired through formal, non-formal and informal learning to determine the extent to which that individual meets the requirements specified in the training package or VET accredited courses.

During the pre-enrolment process candidates are made aware of the availability of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). RPL is an assessment process that involves assessment of an individual’s relevant prior learning (including formal and informal learning) to determine the extent to which an individual meets the requirements specified in the training package or VET accredited course. MCIE will offer each candidate the opportunity to apply for RPL as part of the enrolment process.

Course participants applying for RPL must provide evidence to the satisfaction of MCIE that they are entitled to be granted the award. This evidence must clearly indicate that the applicant is able to demonstrate all the required skills and knowledge of the units or qualification for which they are applying.

If you are granted RPL at MCIE you will be issued with a new Training Plan which reflects your altered program duration. RPL incurs a fee of $145 per hour, and more information can be found in our RPL policy:

To apply for RPL students must complete and submit the relevant application forms available from MCIE.

Credit Transfer

Prior to commencing a course candidates will be made aware of the opportunity to apply for Credit Transfer.

Credit Transfer is the recognition of learning achieved through formal education and training. Under the Standards for Registered Training Organisations, 2015 (Clause 3.5), and the revised Standards for RTO’s 2024 -Clause 1.7, qualifications and statements of attainment issued by any (legally compliant and registered at time of awarding) RTO are to be accepted and recognised by all other RTOs. Credit transfer allows the unit of competency previously achieved by a learner to be recognised when enrolling in a related course and where those units can assist in meeting the requirements for a qualification.

MCIE demonstrates that:
(a) VET students are offered opportunities to seek credit transfer and are made aware of MCIE’s policies for this
(b) credit transfer is based on evidence of prior completion of an equivalent training product demonstrated by AQF certification documentation or an authenticated VET transcript (unless prevented by licensing or regulatory requirements or the training product)
(c) decisions about credit transfer are fair, consistent and transparent, and are documented.

Credit Transfer Procedure

Prospective students and/or current students may apply for Credit Transfer to be considered. The applicant will be invited to attend an initial interview to discuss the likely success of the Credit transfer application. At this interview, further information and documentation will be requested. Only original documents, transcripts, statement of results will be considered for assessment.

Assessment and verification of the application will be undertaken by academic staff.

Applicants will be notified of the assessment decision. Where applicable, exemptions/credits will be given and recorded, and qualifications/Statements of Attainment issued. Written confirmation will be provided on the comparable units for credit transfer and on the revised course duration.

If further evidence is needed, the outcome of the Credit Transfer application will be communicated in writing within 7 days of the interview or receipt of the application. Prospective students and/or current students may appeal a decision within 30 days of the date of the initial decision. The portfolio will then be sent to an Independent Assessor for re-assessment. The cost of this re-assessment will be borne by the applicant. The decision of the Independent Assessor is final.
