Entry requirements

English Language requirements

Candidates must meet one of the following English Language proficiency requirements:

  • IELTS band score of 6.0 or an equivalent internationally recognised exam result in line with Department of Home Affairs requirements 
  • Satisfactory completion of an ELICOS program at Advanced level 
  • Completion of studies equivalent to, or higher than, an Australian Year 11 qualification from an English-speaking country 
  • Completion of MCIE’s English Placement Test with an overall score equivalent to IELTS 6.0, or above 
  • Other recognised English language proficiency tests, such as TOEFL, PTE and OET, may also be considered 
Candidates who have completed 1 year of study in Australia in English within the past 2 years at Certificate IV or AQF level 4 and above are exempt from submitting Australian Year 11 completion certificate or equivalent and Evidence of English Proficiency.

Prerequisites

There are no formal pre-requisite requirements for this qualification. 

Education and skills

Students must

  • be 18 years or over at course commencement
  • complete a Pre-Training Review
  • meet the Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) skill standards for this program level
  • demonstrate they are a suitable candidate for this program
  • demonstrate sufficient digital capability to participate in training and assessment

Regulatory

All candidates require a Unique Student Identifier (USI) prior to certification issuance, subject to applicable offshore exemption arrangements. 

Students with disabilities

MCIE welcomes people with disabilities, learning differences and medical conditions. Acceptance into this program is subject to the candidate being able to undertake the program requirements discussed in the Pre-Training Review, with reasonable adjustment where appropriate. 

Digital technology

Students must have sufficient digital literacy skills to access online content, complete assessments and communicate with trainers using MCIE systems. Students should also have access to the internet, data, and a laptop or computer with Microsoft Teams.  

Industry requirements

Candidates may be asked to provide evidence of the following for work placement (requirements vary according to host employer policies):

  • National Police Check 
  • Working With Children Check, where applicable 
  • NDIS Worker Screening Check, where applicable 
  • Flu, COVID-19 or other vaccination evidence, where required 
  • First Aid Certificate, where required

Prior experience

Credit Transfer (CT) and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) are available. Credit Transfer is free of charge. RPL application fees and conditions are outlined separately by MCIE. 

Delivery and assessment

Blended training delivery

Two days per week of 7.5 hours, totalling 15 hours of scheduled trainer-led delivery. An additional 5 hours per week is undertaken through structured learning activities, including tutorials, online learning and assessment activities. Online resources and assessments are completed via the LMS. 

Duration and structure 

  • 38 weeks total course duration 
  • 28 weeks structured delivery 
  • 6 weeks work placement within course duration 
  • 4 weeks scheduled breaks 

Assessment

Assessment for this program includes written tasks, long and short answer questions, multiple-choice quizzes, group tasks, oral presentations, role plays, case studies, workplace journals, logbooks, portfolios and projects. Most assessments are completed using MCIE’s online systems. 

    Where a student is required to be assessed in the workplace, evidence gathering tools may include:

    • workplace portfolio tasks
    • workplace reflective journal
    • workplace logbook (WPLB)
    • workplace third-party report (TPR)
    • workplace assessor observation

    Work placement

    Students must complete 120 mandatory placement hours for the work-based training component of this program. The MCIE Work Placement Coordinator will organise placement with an approved host employer or support students to arrange their own placement, subject to approval.
