There are no pre-requisite requirements for this qualification.

Education and skills

Students must complete a Pre-Training Review, complete the Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) skill standards for this program level to confirm ACSF entry levels and identify support needs, have completed a year 11 level or equivalent at school, and confirm that MCIE has ensured that the program is suited to their career aspirations and needs.   

Meet inherent physical, emotional and cognitive requirements suitable for direct care work (manual handling, PPE, communication, resilience, etc.).

Regulatory

Domestic: It is recommended that students have attained the age of 18 years or older by the program commencement date.

All candidates require a Unique Student Identification (USI) number. If you do not have a USI number you can apply for one online at https://www.usi.gov.au/students, or you can give MCIE administration staff permission to apply on your behalf.

Students with disabilities

MCIE welcomes all people with disabilities, learning differences and medical conditions. Acceptance in this program is subject to candidates’ ability to undertake all program requirements as discussed in the Pre-Training Review, with reasonable adjustments where applicable.

Digital technology

Students must have sufficient digital literacy skills to access online content, enter answers to written questions and communicate with trainers via email and the learning management system. Students should have access to the internet, data, a laptop or computer with Microsoft Teams to successfully participate in this program.

Industry requirements

Candidates may be asked to provide evidence of the following for work placement (requirements vary according to host employer policies):

  • National Police Background Check
  • Working with Children Check
  • NDIS Worker Screening Check
  • Flu or COVID-19 vaccinations
  • First Aid Certificate
  • Other: Requirements may vary according to employer policies

Prior experience

Credit Transfer (CT) and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) are available. Credit Transfer is free of charge.

RPL applications are subject to fees

Work placement

Students must complete 120 mandatory placement hours for the work-based training component of this program (typically completed in two blocks of 60 hours).

Work placements must be undertaken in a licensed Home and Community Care setting, supporting older people and people with disability, with access to a qualified supervisor.

MCIE facilitates placement coordination via our placement partner, SkilTrak. A $250 placement coordination fee applies. 

Delivery and assessment

Course is accessed online via our user friendly learning management system.

Assessment

Assessments include written questions and quizzes, scenarios, role plays and case studies, practical/simulated activities and reflective journal. Assessments are designed to meet the Principles of Assessment and Rules of Evidence and include at least one mandated direct workplace observation by an assessor.

Required equipment 

Students must have access to a computer or laptop and have sufficient digital literacy skills to access online content, enter answers to written questions, attach and upload documents, communicate with trainers via email, the student portal and the learning management system. 

Student support 

3 hours of mandatory training sessions each week (via Microsoft Teams), plus 1 hour of tutorial and supported learning per week.
