VCE and VCAL changes – what you need to know

VCE (Victorian Certificate of Education) and VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning) are the two main secondary education qualifications offered in the state of Victoria, Australia. The VCE is a more traditional academic qualification, while the VCAL is more focused on practical and vocational skills.

Both the VCE and VCAL are undergoing changes as of 2021-2022. The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) is implementing new changes to the curriculum and assessment methods for both qualifications. Some of the changes include:

  • A new structure for the VCE, where students will be required to complete a minimum of 16 units over their two-year course, including a minimum of four units in English.
  • An increased focus on workplace learning and real-world applications in the VCAL.
  • The introduction of digital technologies as a mandatory subject for all students in both the VCE and VCAL.

It is important for students to stay informed about these changes and how they may affect their studies. They should check with their school or the VCAA for more information.

How will the changes to VCE and VCAL benefit students?

The changes to the VCE and VCAL are intended to benefit students by providing them with a more well-rounded and relevant education that better prepares them for the workforce or further education. Some specific benefits of the changes include:

  • A more flexible structure for the VCE, which will allow students to pursue their interests and strengths while still meeting the minimum requirements for graduation.
  • An increased focus on workplace learning and real-world applications in the VCAL, which will give students hands-on experience in a field they are interested in and help them develop the skills they need to succeed in the workforce.
  • The mandatory inclusion of digital technologies as a subject for all students, which will ensure that students are equipped with the digital skills that are increasingly in demand in today’s job market.
Overall, the changes aim to provide students with more opportunities to develop the skills and knowledge they need to be successful in the future, whether that be in the workforce, in further education or in their personal lives.
