6 Best Free Apps for Students in 2022
Your phone may be your biggest obstacle when you’re trying to focus on studying, but it can also be a great tool on your study journey. Here are 6 apps that’ll help you get through your student years!
Khan Academy
What for: Private tutoring
We’ve all had that one teacher whose teaching style just doesn’t click with our brain. With Khan Academy, you can review tricky topics and have someone explain that new concept in an easy to understand way. If you get the app, you can download videos to view offline and get access to interactive exercises for practice. Like a private tutor in your pocket! And as a non-profit, Khan Academy is committed to keeping their lessons accessible to learners everywhere.
The Khan Academy app is available to download from the App Store and on Google Play.
Duolingo
What for: Learn a new language
You probably already know Duo from all the memes, and yeah, the owl does get kinda pushy sometimes. But getting notifications from Duolingo really does help instil regular study habits, which is absolutely vital in learning a language. Duolingo has lots of language courses available to get you started on your language journey, with many different types of activities that help solidify new vocab.
You can set your daily practice goals yourself, so you’re only accountable for the time you’re willing to put in. From 5 to 15 minutes a day, it’s a great way to study in the middle of a busy schedule.
Monefy
What for: Budgeting
Unlike other budget tracker apps, Monefy keeps everything super simple. All you need to do is enter your expenses. There’s no need to link third party apps to your bank-account. This pared down, sleek, intuitive interface is great for people who don’t mind manually entering their numbers and prioritise usability over convenience.
It’s also great for tracking shared expenses. You can synch using Dropbox or Google Drive, which makes it really easy to share with partners and family and keep track of joint spending. Monefy is a great tool to empower yourself through awareness of your financial habits.
Intellect: Create a Better You
What for: Brain training & wellness
It’s tough out there, with all of the things demanding your attention every day. Intellect gives you a moment to reflect on your situation, featuring a range of self-guided cognitive behavioural therapy programs that help users through everyday stressors and challenges. They have short “rescue sessions” for when you’re feeling overwhelmed, and guided journals to help you gain clarity and reflect.
A lot of their other features are behind a paywall, and it does have limited applicability for people who have more complex therapy needs. But their daily exercises and reflections are still a great way to get you paying more attention to your day-to-day mental health.
Canva
What for: Design on your phone
Tell everyone you know about Canva, because I sure have been! With a huge library of art and graphic elements as well as a wealth of templates, Canva is a one stop shop for all your graphic design needs. Whether you’re making a moodboard for your next creative assignment, drawing up invitations to a birthday party, or making a collage for an insta post, Canva has your back.
So many of their assets and templates are available to free users, with a ton of customisation options. It produces files of pretty much every format; gifs, jpegs, pngs, and pdfs. And if you synch your account you can have access to your designs from any device. You can even share the link to your drafts so that your team can add comments and edits. Fast, easy, and accessible. Honestly, I’m in love.
Study Bunny
What for: Fun study help
And if your phone is still your biggest enemy when you’re trying to put in some serious study hours, there’s Study Bunny.
The app give you your very own study buddy; a cute little bunny. And to keep it alive and enriched you have to buy it food, toys, decor, etc. How do you get the coins you need to do that? That’s right. Head-down and focused studying.
You set your study timer and earn coins so that you can support your bunny’s lifestyle. If you pause, it gives you a motivational quote to help you get going again. You can also log your study schedule on the app and set up a to-do-list. The graphics and interface are simple, and the study incentives are cute but not so distracting that you end up just playing with the app instead of studying. It’s a great way to add some structure to a free-study session, and you gotta put in the hours or your study bunny gets sad!
Don’t knock it until you try it. It really works, no joke.
There are so many apps out there that help you instil good habits and make it through the next few years. If you’ve tried some of the apps above and they didn’t do it for you, don’t be afraid of going off the beaten track and trying something by a smaller company or an independent creator.
