With a Certificate IV in Ageing Support, you’ll gain the skills to plan and deliver personalised care that supports independence, wellbeing and joy. You’ll learn how to create meaningful activities that encourage social connection, mental agility and physical health, from gentle exercise and creative programs to social outings and community events. 

Whether in residential care or supporting people in their homes, you’ll play a vital role in helping older Australians live with dignity, confidence and purpose. 

What the work involves: 

  • providing day-to-day support in line with care plans in home and facility settings
  • planning and facilitating activities that promote social connection, mental wellbeing and physical health
  • coordinating safe indoor/outdoor activities in accordance with organisational risk controls
  • supporting clients to maintain independence, including exercises that build strength, mobility and cognitive skills

    Entry requirements

    Education and skills

    Students must complete a Pre-Training Review, meet the Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Literacy (LLND) skill standards, for Certificate IV level study and demonstrate that they are a suitable candidate for this course.

    Age at commencement

    It is recommended that students have attained the age of 18 by the course commencement date.

    Regulatory

    All participants require a Unique Student Identification (USI) number. If you do not have a USI number you can apply for one online at https://www.usi.gov.au/students, or you can give MCIE’s admin staff permission to apply on your behalf.

    Digital technology

    Students must have sufficient digital literacy skills to access online content, enter answers to written questions and communicate with trainers via email, the student portal and the learning management system. Students must have access to a computer or laptop and the internet with data to complete this course. 

    Enrolment requirements

    To work within the Aged Care Sector candidates must provide evidence that they have applied for:

    • NDIS Check
    • National Police Check
    • Working with Children Check
    • Working with Vulnerable People Registration (in the ACT) 
    • Must agree to provide evidence that the Flu and COVID vaccinations have been taken one month before placement, and complete a COVID test as directed by MCIE or the Host Employer for placement

    Prerequisites

    There are no formal prerequisites for this qualification.

    Work placement support

    MCIE Work Placement Officers facilitate work placement for students to complete mandatory placement hours in an aged care environment.

    Assessment and delivery

    Assessment 
    Assessment for this course includes, written tasks, long and short answer questions, group tasks, oral presentations, role plays, scenarios, work placement journals, portfolio tasks, and projects. Most assessments are submitted online via the Student Portal. 

    Course structure and study load   
    The course is delivered over 56 weeks (52 delivery weeks and 4 holiday weeks). A typical weekly commitment is as follows:  

      • Supervised contact (trainer led online touchpoints and practical workshops): 49 hours total over the delivery period.
      • Supervised assessment (summative activities conducted under supervision): 15.5 hours total.
      • Unsupervised learning and assessment (self directed study and take home assessment): 960 hours.
      • Work placement: 120 hours in an approved aged care setting (counted toward VoL per TAS).

      Indicative guide: allow 20 hours/week during delivery weeks for self directed learning/assessment, in addition to workshops and placement commitments.  

      The supervised training component is delivered through scheduled online trainer led touchpoints and five practical workshops (5 × 5 hours) that collectively support skill development prior to, and alongside, workplace application.
